Samsung Galaxy Note Verizon Wireless smartphone users can now be rooted on the stock firmware and in the due course of this article we will be checking out on how you can do the same with the help of a detailed tutorial. Please note that over a period of this article so as to ensure that device is rooted and installed with the Stock Recovery image, you need to follow some quick pre requisites and the detailed guide on how to apply this firmware update. Once the device is rooted, you can then install all the apps which need root access including the apps of Jellybean 4.2.
Please note that just in case if your device is on any of the custom ROM firmwares which is giving error like force close errors, you can then opt this custom ROM firmware so that all your issues are addressed and also you can be on the official firmware which is rooted. So, let’s head to the quick pre requisites and then followed by the procedure.
Quick Pre Requisites:
- Though this is the Stock / Default Firmware released by Samsung Electronics, you will have to create a backup of all the data present in your phone so as to make sure that just in case if the data gets lost or corrupted, the same can be restored with the help of below mentioned steps.
SMS – Use “ SMS Backup & Restore app”,
Contacts – Sync with the Gmail application,
Call Log - Call Log and Restore
Images, Songs, Videos, Files – Copy to internal / External SD Card,

- From the path “Settings > Applications > Development > USB debugging”, enable the USB Debugging, ensure that the USB debugging option is ticked. Make sure that the minimum charge left in your device is a minimum of 60% or else your Galaxy Note might just get turned off in the middle of firmware update.

Procedure to Update VZW powered Samsung Galaxy Note with Jellybean 4.2 Firmware:
- Download the Firmware Package and Odin from here to your computer. Once downloaded, extract both the files and open odin in your computer.
- Turn off your VZW powered Galaxy Note so that your device can be entered in the Download Mode.
- Download mode can be entered by pressing Volume Down Key + OK button, and holding both simultaneously press the Power Button. Just in case if the device turns ON in the normal mode, you will have to again retry entering the device in the download mode.
- Assuming that all the required drivers are installed in your computer which is generally satisfied by downloading and installing the KIES PC Suite. Connect your device to the computer with the help of original USB cable and then you will see that in ODIN, ID: COM section will turn Yellow indicating that all the drivers have been successfully installed in the computer.
- Now, click on “PDA” in Odin and select the tar file which you got after extracting the zip file of firmware. Please note that once you have selected the file, click on “Start” and then the firmware update process will be started. It may take around 4 – 5 minutes for applying the update and also for 1 -2 minutes for showing up the home screen after reboot. Make sure that Re-Partition option is unticked and nothing should be added in the PIT section.
- Head over to the path “Settings > About Phone” for checking the current firmware version and to check on whether the device is rooted or not, download the “Root Checker” app from the Google PLAY Store and check on whether your phone is rooted or not.
Note: Just in a rare case if the device doesn’t boot up or show the home screen then remove the battery and reinsert the same to boot the device again in the normal mode.
