Wanna root your SONY Xperia Z? Recently after the latest update from SONY, it now seems that most of the users are now unable to root using the older method, not to worry as we have now come up with a new method to root the device. Once you achieve root access on your SONY Xperia Z, you can then not only install the apps which require the root access but can also make use of the custom ROM firmwares which we will be coming up very shortly. So, let’s check out on how exactly you can root the device but before that you need to follow the quick list of pre requisites which are mentioned below;

Quick Pre Requisites:

  • Create a backup of all the data in your Xperia Z ONLY with the help of below mentioned steps. Kindly don’t use ROM Manager or any other tools like PC Companion etc. for creating the backup.

SMS – Use “ SMS Backup & Restore app”,
Contacts –  Sync with the Gmail application,
Call Log - Call Log and Restore
Images, Songs, Videos, Files – Copy to internal / External SD Card,
APN and MMS Settings – Note down from the path “Applications > Settings > Wireless and Network > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names

  • Enable the USB Debugging Mode in your computer from the path “Settings > Applications > Development > USB debugging”. Make sure that your SONY Xperia Z is left with the minimum of 50% battery or else the device might just get turned Off in the middle of firmware update.
  • Also, make sure that the MTP Mode is Disabled which can be done from the path “Settings > Xperia > Connectivity > USB Connection Mode” to select the MSC Mode and not the MTP Mode.

Disclaimer: We should not be held responsible or liable in any manner for any damage caused to the device which is very unlikely if you follow the instructions carefully mentioned in this article.

  • Assuming that you are done with the above mentioned quick pre requisites, you can now proceed to the next step where we have mentioned a detailed guide to Root your Xperia Z.

Guide to Root Xperia Z on the Latest Firmware:

  • Before we proceed, you need to Download the below mentioned two tools;

Android SDK (Download & Install the same in your computer);

Fastboot Drivers (Download & Install the same in your computer)

  • Now, turn Off your device so that it can be entered in the Fastboot Mode. SONY Xperia Z can be entered in the Fastboot mode by pressing Volume Down Rocker Key and while pressing, connect your phone to the computer with the help of original USB cable.
  • Head over to the Device Manager, right click on the “SB1 Fastboot” and choose to update the software and point to android_winusb.inf file in the USB driver folder.
  • Open the ADB Command line and enter the command as;

adt-bundle\sdk\platform-tools

  • After you have entered the command “fastboot devices” in the command line, you will get to see “CB5blahblahblah fastboot” indicating that the phone is successfully connected to the computer with all drivers ready.
  • Now, up next you will need to enter the below mentioned command;

fastboot.exe -i 0x0fce oem unlock 0xKEY

  • The KEY in the above command should be replaced with the one which you got from SONY.
  • Now, download Modified Kernel and Insecure Kernel from here to your computer. Once downloaded, you need to put the same directory from where the ADB is executed which is by default C:\Program Files\Android SDK.

C1

  • Boot your device in the Fastboot Mode and then enter the command in the ADB;

  • Now, your device will boot up, and the phone will be unlocked and rooted. Please note that it will take more time than expected for rebooting the device in the normal mode. Once the device is rebooted, you can then disconnect the device from computer. The whole process of booting might take around 4 -5 minutes maximum.
  • Download the “ROOT CHECKER” app from the Google PLAY Store to check on whether the device is rooted or not. Just in case if the device is not rooted, you need to retry the process of rooting. Download the Busybox in your device as well from the PLAY Store.

Note: If the device gets into the boot loop sequence or say gets stuck in the welcome screen, just press the Volume Up + Volume Down to Power ON to reboot the device and re follow the above mentioned instructions.
